Abstract: Diabetes mellitus is a disorder of metabolism characterised by hyperglycemia due to deficiency or diminished effectiveness of insulin. The disease is a chronic one affecting carbohydrate, protein, fat, water and electrolyte metabolism. In its fully developed form it is characterized by fasting hyperglycemia, atherosclerosis, microangiopathy and neuropathy.
