Abstract: Cardiovascular diseases such as atherosclerosis and myocardial infarction occur as a result of a complex set of genetic and environmental factors. Analysis of all the common risk factors for stroke and heart attack, including age, smoking, high levels of serum lipids, diabetes and socioeconomic status can only account for one-half to two-thirds of the variation in the incidence of cardiovascular disease.
