Abstract: Dr Cutajar discusses studies conducted over the last six years on the presence of women journalists in the media in Malta. She maintains that although it appears that there was a slight shift in which social groups are represented in media texts, the content and focus of news are still on the contribution which certain social groups offer in Malta. This means that although the media are informing their public about events in certain sectors, they are also leaving them in the dark about other sectors. These sectors could perhaps help to improve the civic, economic and political participation of certain social groups to be found in Maltese and Gozitan society. In her paper, Dr Cutajar considers why joumalism in Malta concentrates on certain people and subjects, and the consequences for those groups marginalized by the media, and why the presence of more women in the news media sector could help to bring about some change in journalism.
