Abstract: Broadly speaking, the history of Maltese Education may be divided into two distinct periods; viz., an early period and a modern period. These two periods are sharply divided by that vivid period in local history known as the French Occupation (1800). For, the occupation of Malta by Napoleon and the French meant to the Maltese not only the overthrow of an ageing Order of Knights, but also the introduction of new systems of government, new ideals and new ways of thought. It is also significant to note that to the French, and to the French alone, the Maltese owe their first plan of a national system of primary and secondary education, freedom of the press, and the publication of the first local newspaper -the 'Journal de Malte'
