Abstract: It was Vidal de Ia Blache, one of the founders of the French school of Geographers, who pointed out that the population of the world consists of very small .areas of dense population separated by large areas of very sparse population. This would be true of Malta. Although the estimated population of Malta and Gozo is 315,000, which means that it is one of the most peopled parts of Europe, yet this population is concentrated into a number of relatively restricted areas. Within three miles of Grand Harbour will be found more than 50% of the population; but few people will be found in the North of the Island.
