Abstract: The presence in Maltese waters of yachts in ever growing numbers from shipping ports the world over brings to the fore Malta's potentialites as an important yachting and sailing centre in the Mediterranean. Malta's renewed importance as a base fer sailng craft is nothing new for this island because, in the past, and indeed from the time of the arrival of the Knights of Malta up to the late 18th century, these islands were well known as a big centre for the building of sailing craft in the Mediterranean. Unfortunately, with the introduction of steam propelled boats, this small shipbuilding industry dwindled into insignificance.
