Abstract: The structure-agency debates in Sociology are very much fitting to sociological analyses of the arts. Can sociological investigation ignore the contextual factors that determined the reduction of art? At the same time, can the modes of agency be left out in the analysis? This chapter explores the Maltese situation in relation to this structure and agency interplay; as well as the extent to which the Maltese situation may be understood using key studies on the sociology of the arts; the social construction of the arts (Zolberg, 1990; Wolff, 1981; Sourdieu, 1984, 1973) and the network of cooperation in artistic production (Seeker, 1982) as a framework. The Maltese modern art movement is examined briefly to highlight both the contextual factors that limited art production as well as the artists' modes of agency that brought about changes in the local art world. Reference is also made to recent transformations in the cultural and economic realms to give an outline of the recent creativity drive in the economy and its impact on art, artists and audiences.
