Abstract: The celebrated French painter, Antoine Favray, lived in Malta for almost half a century, from 1744 to 1798. This long stretch of time, which he interrupted only by an absence of nine years, between 1760 and 1769, had been devoted mainly to cultural activit ies and to the services of the Order under whose patronage many of his masterpieces had been executed. Favray's stay in Malta was indeed a story of success. He began his life here as a painter of the Order's celebrities and ended it as a knight almoner of the hospital of the Order of St. John.
