Abstract: The aim of this article is not to bemoan the cruelty of the Maltese people to the animals of these islands. Cruelty is always reprehensible, wherever it may be found, damaging the doer morally as much as it pains the sufferer physically. But in Malta there is, if anything, less willful cruelty to animals than I have met elsewhere in Europe; what there is more of is unthinking cruelty, the causing of unnecessary suffering through negligence or thoughtlessness.
