Abstract: Balzan, though relatively a small village, has an interesting history which goes back well to the 14th century. Situated almost at the very centre of the island, sheltered from the northern winds by Naxxar and placed between the two main roads : Valletta-Mosta and Valletta-Rabat. Balzan is about six kilometres away from the capital. Like its two neighbouring villages - Attard and Lija. which. Together with Ba lzan. are called .. The Three Villages" because of the many characteristic fea tures they have in common - Balzan formed part of the larger parish of Birkirkara. On 14 August 1655, fo llowing the presentation of a petition by the villagers themselves, Balzan was erected a separate parish by the Rev. Mgr. Giovanni Balaguer.
