Abstract: A Maltese surgeon attached to the English Armed Forces in Malta, Dr Giovanni Montanaro, whom the Director General of the Maltese Medical Department called "the indefaticable angel" of the plague patients during the 1813 epidemic. He was born in Valletta in 1783 and educated at the Medical School of the Sacra lnfermeria in Valletta, from where he graduated in medicine. He joined his compatriots during their in surgence against the French in 1798 and was soon commissioned with the allied troops under General Graham.
