| Abstract: | When the Order settled in Malta, it soon discovered that it had less than total sovereignity over its navy which became practically an auxiliary to that of Spain. Political circumstances dictated that as the naval forces in the Mediterranean were rallied behind two main powerful ideologies - the Christian and the Muslim - the Spanish would be the leader of the former. |
