Abstract: This small body of active men was raised towards the end of 1800 by Sir Ralph Abercromby. He placed them under the command of Lieutenant Rivarola who was already serving with the English expeditionary force. The corps consisted of 500 men and their period of engagement was for one yea r. As soon as the Maltese Pioneers were formed and organized they were shipped to Egypt with the expeditionary force at Karakratch in Marmarice Bay. Their first tasks were to cut wood and to load transport trains but they soon found themselves opening the road for further advancing.
