Abstract: Amongst the major non-communicable diseases, the main cause of morbidity and mortality in the Maltese population is diabetes mellitus (Toumilehto et aI, 1988), affecting 7.7% of the population annually (Khalifa, 1989). Treatment objectives for this condition are aimed to: equalise the supply and demand of insulin; avoid acute disease complication e.g. ketoacidoses; prevent or minimise complications of long standing disease; educate the patient to play an active role in the control of his condition.
