Abstract: Population has been described as a collection of elements modified by increases - births and immigration, or decreases - deaths or emigration. Looking for the reason behind these four elements will shed a light on why the population of a particular country increased or decreased. Hence, the study of a fluctuating population will reflect the conditions prevailing over that particular country. Little can be said of Malta's earliest inhabitants let alone the number of people living on the Islands. Unfortunately, this situation persists until the arrival of the Order of St. John, when even if not the exact population figure, it is possible to obtain a rough estimate.
