Abstract: Padina pavonica (L). is a brown alga endemic to the Mediterranean Sea. One of its componentsmaltanedienol, has been shown to be capbale of in vivo calcium fixation. Despite having a non-steroidal scaffold, maltanedienol still bears a marked resemblance to 17-β oestradiol, the endogenous ligand for the Oestrogen Receptor (ER). The ER is an important target for the management of conditions particularly osteoporosis and breast cancer. This study focuses on examining the ability of maltanedienol to modulate the oestrogen receptor ligand binding domain, and to consequently design novel structures which could have potential in management of osteoporosis and breast cancer.
