Abstract: The year 1962-63 was one which seemed to promise much for the future of the theatre, if not of music, in Malta. During 1963-64, unfortunately, that promise did not begin to be fulfilled and not only was the progress made during the previous season not maintained, but it was even lost. All the companies seemed to be vying with one another in producing the most commercial plays. The best the MADC could manage was a third-rate play by Elmlyn Williams; the most serious play Maleth could think of was Dial M for Murder. Let us have popular entertainment by all means, but surely not all the time.
