Abstract: On November 18, 1095, the Pope, Urban II, addressed the Council of Clermont. Unfortunately, it is not exactly known what he said, but it is believed that he touched upon the desecration of the Holy Places, the molestation of the pilgrims and the difficulties being faced by the Christians of the East. It is also said he stressed every Christian's duty to defend his religion, even at the cost of his life. !~mediate preparations for the First Crusade got underway, and thousands responded to his plea. In August of the next year, the " People's Crusade" was set in motion with thousands flocking from all over Europe. Naturally, these pilgrims need lodging and other amenities. Some wealthy merchants from Adalfi, decided to help out by providing hospital care for the pilgrims; that was the beginning of the Order of Saint John, originally carrying out the role of hospitallers.
