Abstract: According to legend, it was St. Francis who built the first crib (Maltese presepju). In 1223, after his return from the Holy Land to Assisi, he decided to deliver in a dramatic way the Nativity message to the people of the Italian mountain village of Greccio. After having obtained the permission of Pope Honorius III, he celebrated mass on an altar, set up near a manger in a forest grotto. Next to the altar, there were the ox and ass but the Holy Family figures were missing. As St. Francis spoke to the villagers an extraordinary light appeared to emanate from him. This gave familiar image to Bethlehem in one's beloved landscape.
