Abstract: A poster presentation regarding the impact of pharmacist advice on the metabolic syndrome. Introduction: The metabolic syndrome is nowadays a major health threat and major public health challenge. The primary cause of the metabolic syndrome is obesity. Obesity causes hyperinsulinaemia, which in turn causes activation of the sympathetic nervous system. It also exerts negative actions on the cardiovascular, renal and vascular systems, resulting in hypertension. Hyperinsulinaemia also causes an increases the chance of type II diabetes and hypercholesterolaemia. Aim: To determine the effect of community pharmacist intervention on lifestyle and pharmacological treatment on patients suffering from the metabolic syndrome.
