Abstract: An entrance exam to Cambridge University once asked the question; ‘How can one hundred people be led by a single person?’ (Roberts 2003: xix). Perhaps the answer to this question can best be summed up in the word - leadership. Grint (2001: 13) describes leadership as both ‘an art’ and ‘an invention’. He defines leadership as the ability to conjure up, in the minds of individuals, an image of the future state of things which must answer four fundamental questions: what the vision of the leader is; where this will be achieved; in what time frame will this be achieved; and why this should be achieved. Seen in this light, leadership must instil hope for a better future; it may evoke a previous golden age and promise the revival of such an age. Whereas the artist uses paintbrushes and canvas to create an image, a leader must make use of imagery and imagination to create a tangible vision which comes alive in people’s minds and which they can work towards (Grint 2001: 13).
