Abstract: This series of 3 articles focuses on Malta and Europe on the brink of World War II. Eighty years ago, on September 1, 1939, Nazi Germany invaded Poland, sparking World War II. In the first article, Charles Debono outlines the main causes and events leading up to the war in Europe. An insert is dedicated to the Malta's political and linguistic question. In the second article, he analyses the various developments leading to the outbreak of World War II, focusing on their effect on Malta's preparations for the outbreak of hostilities. In the third article, Charles Debono recounts the immediate reactions to the German invasion of Poland, the Allied declarations of war and the reactions of the Maltese to the feared onslaught.
