Abstract: This research analyses the different perceptions expressed by local professionals towards the graffiti found on Gozo, one of the islands of the Maltese Archipelago. In fact, it aimed to find out whether these designs are perceived as art or otherwise as acts of crime. To gain an indepth knowledge on the study, the researcher opted for a qualitative approach, where five professionals were presented with a semi-structured interview and a set of graffiti photos to comment about. The data collected was analysed and discussed, also setting the findings against the broader backdrop provided by current literature on the topic. A thematic approach was taken in collecting and analysing data, where five themes emerged from this study. It was found that graffiti are never neutral expressions but always convey a message. These communications are the direct statements of different necessities, sentiments, occurrences, and from time to time even desperations, seeking to grab the attention of others. It was also found that context is of uttermost importance; the area in which graffiti are located may change an entire argument in relation to crime. Findings also suggest that graffiti are a universal medium; they are instantaneously identifiable. Lastly, and remarkably, study findings show that prima facie Gozitan graffiti seem to constitute vandalous acts; however, those scratchings which appeared to be old were interpreted almost as artistic engravings. Finally, the researcher put forth a series of recommendations that can be helpful for future research.
