Abstract: | The purpose of this is to investigate the interviewing and interrogation possess and techniques conducted by the police. Literature from around the globe was scrutinised and compared to the Maltese Police Force. Additionally, this study aimed to observe the interrogation and interviewing tools, skills and techniques used abroad as well as locally with regards to the subject in question. Apart from analysing different techniques, this research aimed to identify the most effective commonly utilised approach as well as the skills required to obtain a successful result. In line with the aims and objectives of this study, such interviews were held with professionals in the field. The results indicate that an evidence-based approach is paramount as it yields the most reliable information. Moreover, the importance of the correct interrogation environment was also highlighted. Finally, it was observed that although literature indicated that the polygraph techniques is an advantageous approach, local police professionals were not keen on using such a tool. In concordance with the results obtained, it is also observed that further training is required in order within this area. The most predominant limitation of this study is that due to the nature of the pre-set interview questions, the participants deviated periodically from the core argument. Recommendations for future research include more focus on the evidencebased approach, training within the local police force as well as the perspective of the interrogated individuals. |
