Abstract: Modern slavery is a global threat affecting millions of vulnerable men, women and children worldwide. While the elimination of this transnational crime requires international cooperation, civil societies and local governments are the forefront of the fight against trafficking in persons. This study aimed to explore the context of trafficking in Malta and how it is being addressed in relation to prevention , the protection of victims and the prosecution of perpetrators. A qualitative approach was adopted for the research stage of this dissertation. Interviews were held with representatives of governmental agencies and NGOs working within the trafficking field. Analysis of the participants’ responses demonstrated significant developments in the support and assistance services provided for recognised victims. In conflict, lack of public awareness on the social context of trafficking challenges victims’ access to quality services. The drafting of a national public awareness campaign announced in 2018 and targeted towards public perceptions of trafficking may have a significant impact on overcoming this barrier. Low levels of prosecution and convictions are discussed in terms of case law.
