| Abstract: | Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) forms part of the Obsessive-Compulsive Related Disorders category in the DSM-5. Individuals diagnosed with OCD manifest obsessions or compulsions or both. The objective of this dissertation was to qualitatively explore and understand the lived experience of parents and siblings whose relative is diagnosed with OCD. Five participants (2 parents; 3 sisters) above the age of 18 whose loved one had OCD, took part in this research study. Semi-structured interviews were conducted to collect the necessary data, and the data was later analysed using Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA). Five superordinate themes and fifteen subthemes emerged. All participants reported the emotional distress experienced as a result of the changes and limitations that OCD brought within their personal lives and their family’s life, for instance, relationships and communication processes, respectively. They also said how they did their utmost to support their loved ones with OCD, especially the parents; however, along the way they also found ways to cope themselves. The conclusions drawn in this study indicate that it is essential to take into consideration these family members’ experiences and to involve the parents and siblings as much as possible within the treatment process of those diagnosed with OCD. |
