Abstract: "Its first origins may be said to date back to the year 1795 quite a venerable age! In this latter year some priests and local gentlemen took the initiative of establishing a school of higher education, literary and religious. Its work was suspended during the troubled days of the French occupation, but was resumed in 1802. It was found necessary by the manager of the school to apply for State help six years later, and it con- tinued thus as a private school subsidised by the Government until 1828, in which year the struggle for existence proved too difficult to maintain".
