Abstract: Vanished, yet still within recall, are the days of the water-filled pottery-pitchers, and of the washing-day wicker baskets, borne on the heads of our women-folk, as they trudged back home from Annunziata Valley. Pitchers and baskets have been discarded, the fatigue of the washing day has been forgotten, and with them the charm of the custom, one of many that have been lost. Ever associated with water is the picturesque Annunziata Valley, still untouched by the hand of modern progress. For ages, this valley, dissecting a small plateau, has been a hive of industrious labour. Here the art of agriculture has been handed down from father to son, who have toiled hard, breaking the clods and their backs to supply the town market with fresh fruit and vegetables.
