Abstract: The British period in Malta witnessed many an interesting event. Amongst these, no doubt, there were the royal visits and royal occasions. One such episode was marked by the arrival (Sunday, 15th October 1876) of the Russian Imperial Steam Yacht 'Livadia' (Capt. Crown ADC) conveying to Malta from the Crimea Her Imperial and Royal Highness the Duchess of Edinburgh and suite. Her Imperial Highness had ended a visit to her parents, the Emperor and Empress of Russia. As the 'Livadia', flying the English Royal Standard at the main, entered the harbour, salutes of 21-guns were fired from the Saluting Battery, and Her Majesty's ships in port and their crews greeted Her Imperial Highness with hearty cheers. Hundreds of spectators crowded the lines of bastions as soon as the 'Livadia' was sighted. [excerpt]
