Abstract: Prior to the coming of the Order of St. John to Malta (1530) the island's strategic point had been Mdina. What is now probably Europe's quietest city was then the focal point for an administration whose main and only horizon was the island's internal affairs. When piratical attacks took place however, and these were by no means uncommon occurrences, it was common practice for the Maltese to retreat into the old city. Things changed when the knights appeared on the scene. For them the Grand Harbour was the most important part of the island and the main area to be protected against attack. Admittedly, Fort St. Angelo had been there well prior to 1530 but with. just two guns it certainly had never been meant to give the Grand Harbour complete military coverage. [excerpt]
