Abstract: One might ask how can one speak of a remote part of an island that is only 95 square miles, 17 miles long and 9 miles at its widest point, while it is one of the most densely populated countries in the world (2,693 per square mile). Yet, about a half of it is largely unpopulated. This is due primarily to the topography of the Island, which is divided into innumerable ridges, ravines and gulleys, and surrounded by many large promontories extending into the sea. [excerpt]
