Abstract: The year 1551 marks an almost complete break in Gozitan history. In that year practically the whole population of the island was carried off into slavery by Sinan Pasha and few ever returned to freedom and fewer still went back to their island home. Only very gradually was Gozo repopulated, and an examination of surnames in Gozo in 1644 shows that about four-fifths of them entered the island after 1551 and proves the catastrophic permanency of the events of 1551. Until the present century surprisingly little speculation has occurred on the destination and ultimate fate of the previous inhabitants except that some managed to ransom themselves and that most died in captivity and never returned to their island home.
