Abstract: It is June and my husband and I have been in Malta for eight months . . . . chosen from the United States for its mild climate, its central location close to Africa and Europe, its ancient history, its inter-mixture of foreign residents, the availability of books in English, and its English speaking population. Chosen with the head, sight unseen. 'three days at the Meadowbank facing the sea, In suburban Sllema, and then our daily life from a flat in Guardamangia. Malta appeared surprisingly urban; when we visited Gozo we realized that we had imagined Malta as Gozo is today, quiet, with little traffic. One major pleasure of Valletta is the limitation of automobiles, in addition of course to the obvious pleasures of museums, markets, and fine old buildings. [excerpt]
