Abstract: Though conservation societies were popular in Britain, and started mushrooming in the nineteenth century, no such organisation was founded in Malta, in spite of British influence and culture, until our country obtained its sovereignty in 1964. We find no less an authentic and celebrated son of Malta than Sir Temi Zammit saying in his little gem, The City of Valletta (1908): "The lover of Valletta feels a pang at every stone pulled down and has little to do but to collect sketches and mementos of the disappearing city, hoping against hope that the historical remains be considered as a sacred heirloom by the new generation."
