Abstract: | It is estimated that there are about 50,000 people of Maltese origin in Canada, the majority of whom emigrated to Canada after the Second World War; in fact about 18,000 Maltese entered Canada since 1946. According to the 1971 Canadian census there are 9,230 who were born in Malta. The Maltese first appeared in Ontario and we read about one Lewis Shickluna native of Malta who, in 1836, came to St Catherine's and established a shipyard on the Weiland Canal. A number of vessels were built at this yard. In 1840 a group of Maltese pioneers ventured into Canada, but nothing more is known about them. [excerpt] |
