Abstract: Juan Bautista Azopardo was born at Senglea, Malta, on the 19th February 1772, the son of Luis Azopardo and Rosa Romano. From his early youth he was involved in naval architecture in Malta. Since at that time Malta still belonged to the Knights of St. John, Grand Master de Rohan arranged for Azopardo to go to Toulon where, around 1787, he pursued his naval studies. His passion for the sea led him to reach the rank of lieutenant in the Order's Navy and in 1793 he also attained commissioned rank in the French Navy. [excerpt]
