Abstract: Census data is the most reliable guide to population trends. In the case of the Maltese, Australian censuses have provided statistical data on persons born in Malta since the first Australian commonwealth census was conducted by the separate Australian colonies, which became the Australian states after Federation in 1901. The purpose of this article is to examine the findings of Australian censuses in relation to the size of the Maltese population in Australia at different times since 1871 and to consider the ethnic strength of the Maltese-born Australians and their descendants in relation to the findings of the most recent census, that of 1986.
