Abstract: It is not too difficult to start a society specialising in some particular subject. All you require are a few dedicated friends and a name. On the other hand to exist and be active for 40 years you need more than just dedication. You need patience, a good organisation, and to be of service to the members. There must also be a need for the society. Even before the Second World War in Malta there was a lot of interest in the cultivation of cacti and other succulent plants. Our climate is ideal for most of them, and some take very little space. Prof. John Borg (who wrote the book Cacti published by Macmillan & Co. in 1937, and later by Blandford Press), had been a sort of foster father to all those with an interest in cacti and other succulent plants.
