Abstract: Throughout the years Maltese churches have been decorated by great works of art. Paintings were commissioned to decorate altars, ceilings or hang against walls. Altars and floors were covered by fine marble. Fraternities, clergymen, and individuals raced each other to commission statues which could be carried, during a procession, round the streets of the locality. At first, statues were imported from nearby Sicily but in time the Maltese began to execute them themselves. One of these sculptors was Salvatore Psaila. Salvatore was born in the maritime town of Cospicua, on the 20th January 1798. His parents were Tommaso Psaila and Margarita nee Galea. He was baptised on the day following his birth and was named Salvatore, Giuseppe, Giovanni and Vincenzo. He was named Salvatore as his paternal grandfather was Salvu. [excerpt]
