| Abstract: | Malta added another page in its unique role in international affairs when the 44th Session of the Council of Europe Parliamentary Assembly - (Spring Session) - took place at the Mediterranean Conference Centre, Valletta, between 24th and 26th March, 1993. In all, some 200 parliamentarians from 26 states - Malta included - participated in this Session. These States were joined by delegations from the 13 Central and Eastern European countries whose parliamentarians currently enjoy guest status within the Assembly. The 26 States consisted of Council of Europe members: Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Cyprus, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Lichtenstein, Luxemburg, MALTA, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, San Marino, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Turkey, and the United Kingdom whereas, the Special Guest States consisted of Albania, Belarus, Croatia, Czech Republic, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Moldova, Romania, Russia, Slovak Republic, Slovenia, and Ukraine. It is pertinent to point out that this Spring Parliamentary Meeting was a first- ever that such a meeting took place in Malta and was held as a result of the initiative of Dr Joseph Psaila Savona, the Head of the Maltese Parliamentary Delegation at the Council of Europe. During his Malta stay the Council of Europe's President of the Parliamentary Assembly, Miguel Angel Martinez, met President Vincent Tabone, Prime Minister Fenech Adami and Foreign Minister Guido Demarco, as well as Leader of the Opposition Alfred Sant. Also in Malta for the Conference was Catherine Lalumiere, the Secretary General of the Council of Europe. [excerpt] |
