Abstract: The study of religion in traditional Maltese society has originally focused on the cult of patron saints. Heavenly saints were found to act as models for earthly patrons. The implementation of reforms in the Catholic Church after the Second Vatican Council has marked the democratization of holiness, giving more importance to the promotion of social justice, peace and the conservation of the environment. In the sociological study of Maltese religion there has been a corresponding shift from the study of patron saints and party politics (Bossavain, 1965), social change and institutional religion (Vassallo, 1979), prelates and politicians (Koster, 1981) to the religious discernment of social trends (Tonna, 1993-5) and the analysis of values in a comparative European perspective (Abela, 1991-5).
