Abstract: With the further shrinkage of the globe and the world becoming more and more like the proverbial "village" where, with the advent of mind boggling inventions like internet and satellite television, ono can keep abreast of happenings on this planet 24 hours a day; and with "breakthroughs" becoming outdated at the very instance we poor mortals try to grapple with and adapt to, it is difficult indeed to predict the turn of events next year, let alone, during the next millennium. However, there are a lot of glaring anomalies in sport world wide which will have to be straightened out in order to stem the rot which unfortunately has set in. One can write volumes about demanding problems now afflicting the world of sport. On the other hand, new shafts of light have appeared to brighten up a somewhat sombre and at times suffocating atmosphere. There is no doubt about it, despite the feeble denials by the authorities concerned, business and commercialism have taken over. This monster which has been allowed to grow to gargantuan proportions must be tackled on a global scale as a matter of great urgency. [excerpt]
