Abstract: The naval bombardment of Genoa was the brain-child of the commander of Force H, Vice-Admiral Somerville. Following the successful torpedo attack on the Italian fleet at Taranto on the night of 12th November 1940, it was rightly assumed that a naval bombardment of Genoa and its anchorage would further shatter the morale of the Italian High Command. Unlike the operation against Taranto, the British fleet lacked aerial reconnaissance reports of Genoa. A reconnaissance Spitfire based in Malta was ordered to take photographs of the base, but failed to return. Since at the time there were no other suitable reconnaissance aircraft in Malta to do the task, it was decided to forego this essential service. [excerpt]
