Abstract: When Lazzaro Pisani returned to Malta from Rome in 1874, he was barely twenty years old, while his contemporary Giuseppe Cali was already twenty-eight. They both finished their studies abroad, Cali in Naples as a student of the "Accademia di Belle Arti" under the guidance of Prof. Giuseppe Mancinelli and Domenico Morelli and Pisani in Rome at the Accademia di San Luca under the guidance of Chev. Luigi Fontana and Commendatore Domenico Bruschi. They were both of them imbued with classicism and they found in Malta a church tradition in painting which never lacked opportunities for artists to show their prowess in sacred works of art.
