Abstract: Rotary was founded in Chicago, U.S.A. by Paul Percy Harris (1868-1947). He was a practicing attorney. Together with three other businessmen he decided to find a club which in his own words would offer: "fraternity without rituals, passwords and secrets ", in contrast to some other clubs then in existence. The first meeting took place in one of the members' office on 23rct February 1905. The name 'ROTARY' derived from the practice of rotating meetings among members' offices and formed the basis of the Rotary logo. Over the years Rotary spread far and wide and at present there are some 1.2 million members world-wide. [excerpt]
