Abstract: Colour is an indispensable component in art and design; colours are everywhere and we perceive them to be a simple day to day phenomenon (Arnheim, 1974). However, scientists and theorists in the field, clearly remark that there exists a more valuable understanding than what we think. In fact, this dissertation aspires to explore the relationship between colour, gym environments and fitness technologies. Thus, mainly this thesis delves into fundamentals of colour, colour perception, colour theories, colour semiotics and more. Besides colour, research is conducted on brand design, identity reinforcement and self-accomplishment through the Sport Identity Theory. Lastly, this dissertation also engages with interactive fitness equipment, technological innovation in sport, and concept ideas for fitness mobile applications. In conjunction with the available literature and my data collection, gym brand named QUAD, is developed to offer an innovative fitness experience which tackles identity reinforcement and self-achievement through the creation of a UI design - a fitness mobile application. Moreover, the fitness UI design project links the user and the gym environment via a colour-coded system; all facilities, fitness equipment and machines are tinted in QUAD’s brand colours. Ultimately, this case study investigates whether individuals would find such an interactive tool, motivating enough for them to embark in a new fitness programme and subscribe to the gym. The primary objective of the research and data collection is to define the best colour scheme associated to QUAD’s concept and the main functional structure of the gym’s platform features. Based upon the results found, the implementation of the design project covers two main creations: designing the fitness centre’s visual identity and developing an interrelated mobile application upon QUAD’s branding. Even though the brand identity and the mobile UI design are perceived to be two separate studies, it is crucial to keep brand consistency and continuity, to deliver a specific brand message via the gym’s visual identity, brand elements, style and values.
