Abstract: Jane the Virgin follows the life of a 23-year-old Catholic Latina virgin, named Jane Gloriana Villanueva, her laid back forty-something mother Xiomara Villanueva and her strict abuela Alba. Jane’s life is turned upside down when she is artificially inseminated and gets pregnant with the baby of rich hotel heir and playboy Rafael Solano. Jane’s life is further complicated thanks to the appearance of her long-lost father and dramatic telenovela star, Rogelio De La Vega, and the formation of a love triangle between her, her long-term boyfriend Detective Michael Cordero and Rafael. Despite all this pandemonium that disrupts obsessively-organised Jane, the three Villanueva women are always there to support each other and comfort each other by watching telenovelas and eating grilled-cheese sandwiches. Jane’s world revolves around telenovelas and these have influenced the way she deals with her obstacles, especially in her relationships. In fact, in this series Jane’s life is narrated just like a telenovela by a sexy Latino narrator. Thus, the following dissertation discusses the telenovela genre, which is the core of Jane the Virgin. In addition to this, Jane the Virgin will be discussed in terms of the telenovela genre, by identifying themes and elements that make the series so popular around the world.
