Abstract: The main focus of the dissertation is to explore materiality and fabrication techniques at all scales, tackling three main aspects throughout; material exploration, digital fabrication and computation, and the notion of scale. Thinking about materials through computational and fabrication techniques can change the way we think about design, optimising processes, responding to the environment and generating new aesthetics and styles. Materials become more responsive as a result of the thorough understanding of material and its affordances, as well as the environment within which it operates, thereby folding into its context. The research explores these themes through various case studies. First, the research of ICD and ITKE are explored by outlining the general theories and computationally driven techniques that inform their research projects. Second, the research of The Mediated Matter Group, Iris Van Herpen, The Self-Assembly Lab and Hussein Chalayan are discussed in terms of the approach to materiality taken throughout their research, which is based on altering material affordances through fabrication techniques. These themes are then used to inform a discussion based on interviews with various designers in Malta who work at fashion and architectural scales. These interviews are supplemented by physical experimentation into material exploration in order to achieve a more holistic understanding of the themes involved. Finally, results are extracted to identify current trends in the Maltese context, and possible future developments.
