Abstract: The study of this dissertation is intended to revolve around observing the importance of spatial understanding, when designing for the users’ movement in space. The discussion is introduced through a theatrical context, using set design as a model to draw parallels to the architectural realities we find ourselves in. Set design will be realised through the application of architectural theory using literature, illustrated by theatrical case studies and artefacts of spatial design. The study aims to practice critical thinking when observing the impact of design which dominates the contemporary aesthetics and environments we immerse ourselves in. Stemming from a conscious awareness, having learnt more about the field of study from a different perspective, a decision was taken to focus on theatrical work set out in unconventional theatrical spaces. For this dissertation, unconventional spaces are going to be defined as environments with potential and history, without maintaining the framework and spatial organisation of traditional theatres. Theatrical set design can be described as a fusion of disciplines coming together, to tell a story in space. This is also done in architecture, recognised through spatial awareness of the environments within which these stories are told. Both disciplines must be perceived first hand, as they require a tactile feeling and physical presence. Both architecture and set design are motivated to creating an experience within space.
