The geography of yacht marinas. Case study : Grand Harbour marina, Vittoriosa

Abstract

I have always considered Geography as a discipline that opens your mind to the world, to new unheard-of places, cultures and people. My first step in this field was when I chose the subject as an 'O' level option. The B.A. course at University further enhanced this experience through lectures and field visits thus awakening my strong interest in topics dealing with coastal zone management, recreation, issues of conflict and sustainable development, the latter bringing together the former three complex issues. In my career at the IOI-Malta Operational Centre, I have come to understand fully the complexities and difficulties in achieving this goal. Abiding to international and national policies, law and regulations, facing financial limitations and most importantly trying to bring together people with different interests and views pose the greatest challenge. However, I am a firm believer that the most important contributor in decision making is the local community. Their collaboration and opinions, as well as expertise concerning the area that is under study and/or discussion are crucial. They represent culture and very often engage in activities that tend to go unnoticed by decision makers. It is thus very important to adopt a bottom-up approach in order to reduce conflict. In my first dissertation entitled 'Identifying Recreational Conflict at the Waterfront, Case Study: Ta' Xbiex, Gzira and Sliema' I have touched upon the issues mentioned above. I have since felt the need to delve further into the subject.
